Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the growth strategy for the foundations and medical groups within an assigned Sutter Health (SH) operating unit (OU), including the recruitment of new physicians, practice acquisitions, development of new service lines, and establishing relationships with community physicians.
  • Support specific foundation and medical group business needs, initiate and complete small merger and acquisition (M&A) activities, lead the development of physician growth plans, recruitment and practice stand-ups, as well as medical office building (MOB) planning and office deployment.
  • Utilize the planning process and take the necessary actions to analyze, develop, and deliver growth strategies that meet the business goals and objectives in all areas of assigned responsibilities.
  • Ensure the successful and efficient start-up of a new service through the development of comprehensive business plans for all new business ventures including staffing recommendations, budget proposals, coordinating the business development phase, and creating the documents to operationalize the business strategy.
  • Provide consulting on practice development to Sutter Health entities as requested, with the perspective and expertise to enhance efficiencies (financial and business) and to increase productivity.
  • Functioning in a consultant capacity, partner with the operation teams to study relevant sections of the business, to identify opportunities for improvement and to assist in the implementation of the pilot phase of these projects.
  • Incorporate a working understanding of business and financial practices, compensation and strategic planning activities to effectively interact and work with all levels of staff, physicians and leadership within SH.

Qualifications

Education

BA Degree in Computer Science, Business, Health Care Administration or related field, or equivalent experience required.

Experience

  • Seasoned business development executive with a proven track record of developing successful business plans and implementing organizational changes typically acquired during 5 years of increasingly responsible senior leadership experience
  • Proven expertise in leading business development teams as typically acquired during 4-6 years in a similar role
  • Extensive experience in management, finance, forecasting, strategic planning and risk analysis, including generating new sources of revenue
  • Seasoned experience providing foundation-related leadership, communication and influence at the highest organizational level
  • (C-suite) as well as at the regional and/or entity level
  • Prior experience demonstrating the ability to align planning, budgeting and forecasting processes into an actionable strategy that delivers the desired results
  • Management experience working in an ambulatory care setting and clinical care delivery healthcare systems in a highly matrixed regional role is strongly desire

Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of multi-specialty medical group administration and operations, including medical group affiliations, business plans and proformas, budget development, managed care contracting, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), finance, and integrated healthcare concepts and applications
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare policies and regulations, finance, administrative and clinical operations (workflows and dependencies), managed care, capitation, strategy, marketing and integrated delivery systems is essential
  • Functional knowledge of governmental and healthcare fiscal regulations and reporting requirements
  • Working understanding of business and financial practices, compensation, strategic planning activities, and the ability to effectively communicate, interact and work with all levels of staff, physicians, and leadership within Sutter Health
  • Thorough knowledge of business development process and customer relationship management (CRM) principles, methodologies and tools, including formal change architectures, models, and frameworks
  • Diverse knowledge of industry direction, including a clear understanding of contemporary healthcare trends and issues
  • Understanding of and experience with Lean or other process improvement philosophies and methodologies desired

  • Ability to establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with hospital executives, Boards, medical staffs, clinical leaders, business leaders, vendors, and other key customers  to ensure effective management of complex, multi-faceted business development projects is required
  • Excellent written/verbal interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact diplomatically and effectively with a broad and diverse group of peers, users, executives, patients, stakeholders and vendors
  • Strong business acumen and exceptional analytic skills with the proven ability to provide healthcare benefit solutions and deliver business development opportunities that meet growth-driven objectives
  • Advance level of computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including other relevant software/tools for project management, data analysis and presentations
